You may not want to have to construct a BFI from scratch yourself - researching, experimenting Avoid design flaws or worse. Just follow written instructions with pictures. I located, purchased, designed, made thetemplate adjustments,cut and finished the pieces, provided the correctclips, hardware and hoses. Kit Install Overview:Youunbolt and discard the inadequate snorkelfromtheexisting airbox.Then remove, and cut a hole in the existing airboxaccording to the provided air-optimized and safe template. TheKit isinstalledto extend, enclose, andredirect a larger volume of cold air.Replacethe airbox. Then, a simpleand safe realignment to a few factory parts ismade while adding pieces that are provided (no cutting)This safely redirectsthesome of the airflow from theupper grill section - which then "rams"coldair into the airbox. What can this Kit do foryour car?Increasedhorsepower (3rd Party dyno-up to 15.7 (SC300); 17.6 (SC400) horsepower results withversion 3.3) - dyno testing hasbeengenerally accepted since ~2003.After installation in my1993 SC400™, itacceleratesquicker, gears shifteasier and smoother, gets better gas mileage, and hasmuch better engine sound. (even withnormal acceleration)I enjoydriving the car much more.Mycars passed state emissions inspections for 19 years in Georgia, U.S.A.without any issue.
I would say that at a minimum with 3.3,the carperforms better under normal driving 3.5 iseven better and the car shifts faster and easier. Plus, I gotimproved gas mileagefrom 3.3&even better gas mileagefrom 3.5 - especially on the lowerRPM range. When accelerating hard, the car comesalive with much better sound, and better acceleration. I installed this Kit inmyown '93 SC400™ inApril 2008 & my '99 SC400™ in August2018- withNO issues whatsoever,no water ingestion, nooverheating, no excessive filter replacements, nothing! In the pictures, you cansee my original, beaten-up BFI cover andacustomer's BFI on his SC300™- he madesome furtherrefinements to thetop cover (eliminated the frontclips, resizing the front and left edges for a sleeker look. What is the reason forthe Intake Kit?As goodas the SC & Soarer™enginesare from the factory, it is commonly known andaccepted that the airflow to the engine is badly restricted. Withmorepressurizedcoldair, the engine performs better.Thereason is that the Kit has a combination of3 Crucial Features:extended cold-air separation from road and engine heat, larger volume of cold,rammed-air from the front grill,and a largerintake capacity.HavingALLof thesefeatures is the key.
Other off-the-shelf intakesdo not perform this good according totesting that others have done. Thereason is that off-the-shelf intakes do not haveallof the 3 Features. This Kit is less expensive than other lesserperforming off-the-shelf products.You canstill use your factory or secondary market air-filter with the Kit, so youdon’t have to purchase expensive and maintenance-prone air filters.The BFI has been widely accepted for about 21 years by thosethat have taken the time to properly investigate.
Whatyou need to know:Since Ihave done the hard part for you by putting together this Kit, you will stillneed to make final adjustmentsbyform-fittingor bending some of the plastic pieces using a hair dryer or heat-gun to get theproper fitment.Installation can be done in stages - so you can drive yourcar in between stages. I was amazed how easily the install came together.
You will need a metricsocket set and basic toolsto complete the installation.So, ifyou want your car to run better, then this is considered a great project with aclean, near factory appearance, giving you better gas mileage (yes - a gaspayback), more enjoyment and worthwhile results!
If you take your time, and do not rush through the install, thenyou should be successful. If these samepieces fit my cars, then theyshould fit your car toobecause they are cut from the same templates.
