As a vehicle gets older and the mileage gets higher, the cost for an extended car warranty will get more expensive and the repair costs that one would encounter for an older, out-of-warranty vehicle will also rise. Taking advantage of a vehicle's newness and low mileage is a cost effective approach to be protected against future repair costs and keep the up front extended warranty costs down. An extended auto warranty provides great protection against such expenses. Some extended car warranties are also transferable, allowing for increased vehicle resale value when it’s time to sell the car.

Most standard manufacturer car warranties cover the car for 3-5 years and 36 – 50 thousand miles.  Extended car warranties are usually available directly from the manufacturer if you purchase the extended warranty before the original car warranty expires.

If you are interested in purchasing an extended warranty for your car and the original car warranty has already expired, you’ll most likely need to purchase your extended warranty from an outside warranty provider.  There are many different levels of extended warranty protection, so it’s very important to carefully review the different options available from each company.

Some items to consider when purchasing an extended auto warranty are the type/scope of coverage, any deductibles, the maximum amount the company will payout for repairs and any limitations on where you are able to have your car diagnosed and repaired.

Most extended car warranties allow you to take the car to any licensed repair facility. You usually have the option of taking your vehicle to your dealership or any ASE certified repair facility across the country.  Make sure to have the extended car warranty service agreement in the car so it can be reviewed by the repair facility.  This will help them determine your coverage and call for a repair authorization for the covered repairs less a deductible where applicable.  Most claims are normally paid directly to the repair facility so you do not have to pay for your repair and wait to get reimbursed.
